Herons tame Tigers

GENEVA, N.Y.-- An offensive explosion by the William Smith College soccer team buried the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers, 6-0 this afternoon. A five-point afternoon by sophomore forward Alyson Stachura (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.) put the game away for the Herons.

William Smith wasted no time getting started in the first half. In the fourth minute sophomore midfielder Kristin Falzarano (Morristown/Morris Plains, N.J.) beat Tiger goalie Carrie Terwilliger off of a corner kick by junior midfielder Summer Greiner (East Syracuse-Minoa/Kirkville, N.Y.) to put the Herons up 1-0. Sixteen minutes later first-year midfielder Stephanie Leveille (Ossining/Ossining, N.Y.) made it 2-0, beating Terwilliger again from the top of the box. Greiner added another in the 36th minute as the Herons out shot RIT 11-1 in the first half.

In the second half William Smith continued to dominate, out shooting the Tigers 11-2. Stachura scored two unassisted goals a minute and a half apart in the 71st and 73rd minutes to put the game away. In the 81st minute sophomore forward Erika Turner (Wayzata/Plymouth, Minn.) netted one more, closing the scoring at 6-0.

Junior goalie Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Caledonia, N.Y.) split the shutout with first-year goalie Rebecca Splain (Middlebury Union/Middlebury, Vt.). William Smith improves to 10-4-1 on the season while RIT drops to 10-4-0. The Herons are back in action Oct. 21, at 1 p.m. when they travel to Cortland to take on the Red Dragons.
