Herons win UCAA crown, clinch NCAA Berth

GENEVA, N.Y.-- - The top-ranked William Smith College field hockey team completed its 2000 Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association campaign with a 6-0 rout of Hamilton College. The victory gives the Herons the UCAA title and an NCAA tournament bid. Sophomore forward Sheila McKevitt (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) led the William Smith charge with two goals and senior forward Sage Lansing (Lake Forest/Lake Forest, Ill.) added a goal and an assist.

Lansing opened the scoring just 49 seconds into the game, beating Continental goalie Sarah Baldwin. Nine minutes later sophomore midfielder Erin Weir (Blair Academy/Califon, N.J.) added another, putting the Herons up 2-0. McKevitt scored at the 10:29 mark and William Smith held a 3-0 lead at the half.

Three minutes into the second half, senior forward Lauren vonBereghy (University Lake School/Hartland, Wis.) iced the game, making it 4-0. McKevitt recorded her second goal of the game less than a minute later and senior defender Jess Dascano (Afton/Afton, N.Y.) closed the scoring at the 22:45 mark, making it 6-0.

The Herons close the regular season at 16-1 overall and 7-0 in the UCAA, while the Continentals fall to 3-11 on the season and 1-6 in the league. NCAA tournament bound William Smith will now await the NCAA selection show on Sun. Oct. 29, to find out who and where they will be playing next.
