GENEVA, N.Y.–The fourth-ranked William Smith College field hockey team shut out visiting Ithaca College this afternoon, 4-0. The win extended the Herons (10-1) win streak to 10 games.
The Bombers, who entered today’s game ranked eighth in the NFHCA Division III Coaches Poll, were outshot 11-1 in the opening 35 minutes, but managed to keep William Smith off the scoreboard until the four minute mark. Junior Jackie Hall (Berkshire School/Newport, R.I.) broke the scoreless tie with the first of her two goals on the day. Senior Sage Lansing (Lake Forest/Lake Forest, Ill.) earned the assist. Sophomore Amanda Arpé (Greely/Falmouth, Mass.) gave the Herons a two-goal cushion 50 seconds before halftime.
After the break, senior Lauren vonBereghy (University Lake School/Hartland, Wis.) and Hall padded that lead with goals at the 28:13 and 13:14 marks, respectively.
Junior Marjie MacVean (Johnstown/Johnstown, N.Y.) made four saves to notch her third shutout of the season, while sophomore Melissa Halderman (East Islip, N.Y.) turned aside 13 shots for Ithaca (7-3).
The Herons return to action on Fri., Oct. 6, when they travel to Union College for a 4 p.m., game.
