GENEVA, N.Y.– Ithaca College used a second half goal and a little luck to nip Hobart College, 1-0 this afternoon. The Statesmen (5-7-1, 2-1-1UCAA) missed an opportunity to reach .500, while the Bombers (5-4-1) move back above the mark with the win.
Ithaca controlled the play for much of the first half, outshooting Hobart 11-3. The Bombers had three strong scoring opportunities from in close, but were stoned each time by sophomore goalie Cory Rosier (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.).
Midway through the second half, former Statesman Andy Dusel was robbed by a diving Rosier, taking away a sure goal. The save resulted in an Ithaca corner kick and the Bombers took advantage. After a scramble in front, Wade Wilkinson buried a cross from teammate Tom Ciolek putting Ithaca up 1-0 at the 68:51 mark. Three minutes later junior midfielder Jesse Martin (Cicero-North Syracuse/Liverpool, N.Y.) hit the post, just missing the equalizer. In the 77th minute sophomore midfielder Bryan Bome (Marcellus Central/Syracuse, N.Y.) appeared to tie the game, driving a rebound past Ithaca goalie Glenn Palmieri, but was ruled offside. The Statesmen continued to pressure the Bombers, but couldn't find the net, losing 1-0.
Rosier finished with eight saves as the Statesmen dropped their third 1-0 decision of the season. The Statesmen are back in action to face the Union College Dutchman at home Oct. 13, at 4 p.m. as they resume their UCAA schedule.
