AMHERST, MASS.-- The Willam Smith College field hockey team overpowered New England College, 3-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Herons out played the Pilgrims in the first half, out shooting them by a 9-1 count, but couldn't find the net. William Smith kept up the pressure in the second half, finally getting on the board on a goal by junior midfielder Nicky Livingston (Whitney Point/Whitney Point, N.Y.) at the 32:40 mark. Less than 10 minutes later the Herons struck again, this time it was sophomore forward Sheila McKevitt (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) finding the net. Senior forward Sage Lansing (Lake Forest/Lake Forest, Ill.) iced the game firing a cross from Livingston through a crowd and into the net, to close the scoring at the 17:50 mark.
Livingston's assist ties the Heron single season record of 14 set by Tina Warner in 1994. The Herons will face SUNY Cortland tomorrow in the Regional Championship at 1 p.m.
