Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.--The Hobart College basketball team picked up its second win of the season with a 78-69 victory over visiting Utica College. The Statesmen, led by a 15-rebound performance by sophomore center Joe Corbett (Haverford School/Philadelphia, Pa.), outrebounded the Pioneers 43-31 to improve to 2-2 this season.
Corbett posted his third straight double-double of the season with 23 points and 15 caroms, while junior guard Brian Schiele (St. Anthony's/Seaford, N.Y.) just missed a double-double, adding 21 points and eight assists.
Hobart led 17-16 midway through the first half when the Statesmen used an 11-0 run, including five from sophomore guard Tim Lomot (Amityville/Amityville, N.Y.), to built a 12-point first half lead. Lomot finished with nine points. Hobart took a 33-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Utica chipped away at Hobart's lead in the second half, closing to within five, 52-47, with 8:52 minutes remaining. The Statesmen controlled the tempo down the stretch building a 71-58 advantage-matching their biggest lead of the game-with 58 seconds remaining. The Statesmen sank 7-of-10 free throw attempts in the final minute to ice the game.
Sophomore guard DeWaun Cheatham (Franklin/Rochester, N.Y.) paced the Pioneers with a game-high 23 points. Senior guard Steve Crawford (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) added 15 for Utica (4-2).
Hobart returns to action on Dec. 29, when they play in the first round of the D3Hoops.com Classic hosted by Catholic University. The Statesmen will face Plymouth State College at 6 p.m.
