Herons capture 10th consecutive season opener, 13-5

PANAMA CITY, Fla. -- For the second consecutive year, the William Smith College lacrosse team commenced its season with a victory over Connecticut College in the Sunshine State. Ranked No. 4 in this week's IWLCA poll, the Herons (1-0) scored the first 10 goals of the contest en route to a 13-5 decision over the 18th-ranked Camels (0-1).

William Smith led 7-0 at the half, and did not allow a Connecticut goal for the initial 39 minutes, 23 seconds of action. The Herons led 12-1 midway through the second stanza, and went on to record their 10th straight season-opening win.

First-year Megan Shea (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) led William Smith with three goals and one assist, while senior Danae Nason-Junco (BB&N/Boston, Mass.) and junior Meghan Genovese (Geneva/Geneva, N.Y.) both had two goals and an assist. Senior Rebecca Armiger (Centennial/Baltimore, Md.) and first-year Amanda Wynn (Loomis Chaffee/Aspen, Colo.) each added one goal and one assist.

Senior goalie Leslie Khachadourian (Guilderland/Albany, N.Y.) notched 12 saves and allowed just two goals in 56 minutes of work, while classmate Christine Giordano (Clarkstown/New City, N.Y.) stopped two Camel shots on goal.

First-year Leslie Masterpaul (Cleveland Heights/Cleveland Heights, Ohio), junior Maura Reilly (Miss Porter's School/Newington, Conn.), and sophomores Mary Sheehy (Canterbury/New Milford, Conn.) and Gwen Parker (Woodstock/Brownsville, Vt.) all contributed one goal. First-year Jackie Toner (Geneva/Geneva, N.Y.) handed out one assist to round out the scoring for William Smith.

For Connecticut, senior Meghan Welch (Framingham, Mass.) netted a game-high four goals and junior netminder Elayna Zachko (Saugus, Mass.) finished with nine saves.

The Herons return to action on Fri., March 24, at 10 a.m., when they take on No. 12 Trinity College (Conn.) in Panama City, Fla.
