Hoyas use late fury to avoid upset

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y. -- The sixth-ranked Georgetown Hoyas used seven unanswered goals to escape Boswell Field with a thrilling come-from-behind victory over the 16th-ranked Hobart Statesmen, 10-9. Junior Jamie Sharpe (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) paced the Hoyas with the last three goals of the contest.

The Statesmen (5-4) got off to a fast start outscoring Georgetown 3-1 in the first 15 minutes of the contest. Junior midfielder Joe Leska (Vestal/Vestal, N.Y.) opened the scoring two minutes into the contest. Senior attackman Peter Velepec (Irondequoit/Rochester, N.Y.) evened the game three minutes later. Junior attackman Jamie Breslin (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) put Hobart back on top at the 8:42 mark and Leska made it a two-goal game two minutes before the end of the frame.

The Hoyas' Andy Flick (Garden City, N.Y.) pulled Georgetown (9-1) to within one early in the second quarter, but senior attackman Jared Bebee (West Genesee/Syracuse, N.Y.) made it 4-2 Hobart just three minutes later. The goal extending his consecutive games with at least a point streak to 36 games. Breslin incresed the lead to three with 4:02 remaining in the first half. Velepec tallied 30 second later for the Hoyas, but junior midfielder Jason Ouellet (Avon Old Farms/Chesire, Conn.) scored the final goal of the opening half to give Hobart a 6-3 lead. Ouellet finished with two goals and three assists.

The Statesmen took their biggest lead of the game in the third quarter following back-to-back-to-back goals by Ouellet, sophomore attackman David Spratlen (Colorado Academy/Littleton, Colo.), and Breslin to claim a 9-3 lead with 9:18 remaining. The Hoyas scored the last three goals of the third to cut the Statesmen's six-goal lead in half.

Senior midfielder Art Price (Glyndon, Md.) opened the fourth quarter scoring at the 11:19 mark, setting the stage for Sharpe's fourth quarter heroics. The attackman netted goals at 11:05, 8:12, and 6:37.

Sophomore Scott Schroeder (Summit, N.J.) turned in a stellar performance between the pipes for Georgetown, turning aside 20 shots, while senior James Murtha (Manhasset/Manhasset, N.Y.) recorded 10 saves for Hobart.

The Statesmen return to action at 4:30 p.m., on Tues., April 18, when the host the ninth-ranked Cornell Big Red.
