ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- First-year Amanda Wynn (Loomis Chaffee/Aspen, Colo.) and senior Danae Nason-Junco (BB&N/Boston, Mass.) each scored one goal in the final two minutes, 18 seconds, to snap a 7-7 tie and give the eighth-ranked William Smith College lacrosse team a 9-7 victory over the University of Rochester. First-year Jackie Toner (Geneva/Geneva, N.Y.) had three goals, and senior goalie Leslie Khachadourian (Guilderland/Albany, N.Y.) notched 12 saves for the Herons (10-1), who avoided their first two-game losing streak since 1990. The Yellowjackets had won six of their previous eight overall, but fell for the second straight time at home to conclude their season at 9-6.
After mishandling a pass, Wynn fired the game-winner past Rochester junior goalkeeper Arna Berke-Schlessel (Hamden Hall CDS/New Haven, Conn.) with 2:18 left. Berke-Schlessel finished with a career-high 15 saves, including 11 in the first half. The Heron defense forced a turnover which led to Nason-Junco's insurance score with 54 seconds remaining, her first since April 18, against Nazareth College.
Trailing 2-1 in the opening half, William Smith netted four consecutive goals -- two by Toner -- to claim a 5-2 lead with 24 seconds remaining until halftime. However, Rochester sophomore Jennifer Seferiadis (Newton North/Newton, Mass.) recorded her first tally of the season with seven ticks left to make it 5-3 at the half.
After the Yellowjackets tied the game at 5-5 with 19:09 left in the contest, senior Rebecca Armiger (Centennial/Baltimore, Md.) assisted on goals by Wynn at the 12:33 mark, and first-year Megan Shea (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) 26 seconds later to help William Smith regain a two-goal advantage. Rochester sophomore Jenny Rogers (Randolph Union/Brookfield, Vt.) provided a pair of goals, the second on a free position shot with just over four minutes remaining, to knot the score at 7-7.
Shea's lone goal of the day gave her a team-best 50 points on 32 goals and 18 assists. Toner's three goals gave her seven in the last two games and 14 on the year. Sophomore Gwen Parker (Woodstock/Brownsville, Vt.) had one goal, her 29th of the season, while Armiger totaled one goal and three assists. Nason-Junco contributed one goal and two assists, and Wynn added a pair of goals.
Khachadourian now has 489 career saves, and will look to become just the second goalie in school history to register 500 career stops on Sat., April 29, when William Smith hosts No. 19 Union College (7-5). The Herons' regular season finale begins at 2 p.m.
