Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – For the sixth straight game, the Hobart lacrosse team came out fired up. The Statesmen attack jumped out to an early 5-2 lead, only to see the third-ranked Loyola Greyhounds use a four-goal second quarter run to propel them to a 17-13 win over 12th-ranked Hobart. For the third straight game, Jamie Breslin paced the Statesmen attack with three goals and two assists.
The Greyhounds opened the scoring just over a minute into the contest, but Hobart responded with back-to-back goals by Dave Spratlen and Jason Ouellet. Loyola tied the contest, appropriately enough, on a goal by D.J. Knott at the 9:18 mark.
The Statesmen put some distance between them and their hosts with a three-goal run late in the opening frame. Tallies by Tim Booth, who won 15-of-25 faceoffs on the day, Christian Gould, and Ouellet gave Hobart a 5-2 lead.
The Greyhounds outscored the Statesmen 4-1 over a seven minute stretch, spanning the end of the first quarter and the start of the second quarter to even the game at 6-6. Hobart answered with a 3-1 run on scores by Breslin, Leska, and Gould to build a 9-7 lead and set the stage for Loyola's decisive run.
The Statesmen trailed by just a single goal at the break, 11-10, but the Greyhounds netted the first two goals of the second half to keep Hobart's upset bid at bay. The visitors twice pulled to within two goals, the last time on Spratlen's team-leading seventh extra-man tally of the season at the 1:46 mark of the third quarter.
James Murtha got the start in the cage, making 13 saves in the opening 49 minutes, while Hunter MacDonnell turned aside two shots in the final 11 minutes.
The Statesmen return to action on Sat., May 6, when they close out the regular season at home against fifth-ranked Princeton.
