Herons still perfect after Heron Draw win

GENEVA, N.Y. -- In the opener of the 2000 Heron Draw, sophomore Susanna Young (Cleveland/Cleveland Heights, Ohio) tallied a career-high four goals to lead fourth-ranked William Smith College to a 22-5 victory over the Denison University women's lacrosse team on Saturday.

First-year Megan Shea (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) had three goals and four assists for the Herons (6-0), who outshot Denison 44-22 to claim win No. 26 in their last 27 regular season contests. Senior goalie Leslie Khachadourian (Guilderland/Albany, N.Y.) recorded 12 saves and now has 426 in her career, fourth best on William Smith's all-time list. She also moved into sole possession of third place on the Herons' career wins list with 30. Senior Rebecca Armiger (Centennial/ Baltimore, Md.) finished with three goals and two assists, senior Danae Nason-Junco (BB&N/Boston, Mass.) delivered three goals and one assist, and junior Meghan Genovese (Geneva/Geneva, N.Y.) added three goals.

Sophomore Jamie Fox (Locust Valley, N.Y.) led Denison (2-4) with two goals. Senior goalkeeper Katherine Haney (Atlanta, Ga.) and first-year netminder Nicole Botteri (Mount Bethel, Pa.) had 14 and four saves, respectively.

Tomorrow, Denison takes on Amherst at 11 a.m., while the host Herons square off with Middlebury at 1:30 p.m.

Amherst 11, Middlebury 10

First-year Erin Beaumont's (Summit, N.J.) free position goal with 10:13 remaining in the second half proved to be the game-winner as No. 3 Amherst College edged No. 2 Middlebury College, 11-10, in the second game.


Junior Kristin Osborn (Morristown, N.J.) scored four goals and handed out a pair of assists to give the Amherst Jeffs a perfect 6-0 record on the season.

Amherst led 9-6 at halftime, and 11-8 on Beaumont's third goal of the afternoon. Middlebury sophomore Laurie Richmond (Wellesley, Mass.) netted two unassisted goals in a one-minute span to bring the Panthers within one goal with 5:45 remaining in the game.

Senior Alie Stechenberg (Longmeadow, Mass.) notched two goals, while classmate Rachel Bernstein (Maplewood, N.J.) and junior Sarah Scheesele (Pittsburgh, Pa.) both contributed one goal and one assist for the Jeffs. For Middlebury (3-1), senior Jessa Martin (Barnard, Vt.), sophomore Julia Bergofsky (Exeter, N.H.), first-year Char Glessner (Ipswich, Mass.), and Richmond all had two goals.
