Duke, Georgetown advance in NCAA play

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y. -- Duke and Georgetown universities advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Tournament this afternoon with victories over Cornell University and Hobart College, respectively. The Hoyas (12-2) overcame a three-goal second half deficit to notch a 14-12 win over the Big Red (10-4), while the Blue Devils (10-4) ran all over the Statesmen (7-7), recording a 13-1 victory. Both games were played at Hobart's Boswell Field in front on an estimated crowd of 3,246.

GEORGETOWN 14, CORNELL 12

Despite trailing eighth-seeded Cornell by three goals on two occasions -- 5-2 with 12:27 to play in the second and 12-9 with 11:31 remaining in the game -- and losing 22 of 29 faceoffs, Georgetown was able to score the last five goals of the game to claim a 14-12 win. Senior attackman Andy Flick (Wilton/Wilton, Conn.) key the Hoyas' charge scoring a game-high five goals, including three of the last four.

Trailing 12-9 on Cornell senior attackman Sean Steinwald's (De La Salle/Ottawa, Ont.) fourth goal, junior midfielder Scott Doyle (Georgetown Prep/Rockville, Md.) netted an extra-man tally to get Georgetown to within two with his fourth goal of the day at the 9:03 mark. Flick added another extra-man goal three minutes later off a feed from sophomore midfielder Steve Dusseau (Upper Arlington/Columbus, Ohio) to cut the deficit to one. Senior attackman Scott Urick (Robinson/Fairfax, Va.) evened the contest with 2:47 remaining, finishing a pass from first-year attackman Mike Hammer (Robinson/Fairfax, Va.). Flick scored the game-winner, courtesy of a Dusseau helper with 2:19 remaining and added an insurance goal at the 1:51 mark.

Cornell squandered a sterling effort in the cage by Justin Cynar (Massapequa/Massapequa, N.Y.). The sophomore posted 19 saves, many on point-blank shots. Sophomore Scott Schroeder (Summit/Summit, N.J.) made four stops for Georgetown.

The Hoyas advance to the quarterfinals, where they'll face the tournament's top-seed, Syracuse, at 1 p.m., on Sat., May 20, at Rutgers University.

DUKE 13, HOBART 1

The seventh-seeded Blue Devils rode the torrid goaltending of junior Matt Breslin (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and the laser-like stick of junior attackman Greg Patchak (Boy's Latin/Timonium, Md.) to an impressive 13-1 win over the Statesmen. Breslin posted a career-high 22 saves, while Patchak scored a game-high six points (3-3).

Duke grabbed the lead just four minutes into the contest on a goal by first-year midfielder Kevin Brennan (Farmingdale/Farmingdale, N.Y.), assisted by Patchak. Hobart evened the contest with less than four minutes remaining in the opening frame. Junior midfielder Jason Ouellet (Avon Old Farms/Cheshire, Conn.) was credited with the only Statesmen score.

The Blue Devils scored four times in the second quarter, including a pair of extra-man goals both assisted by Patchak, to take a 5-1 lead into the locker room at halftime. After the break, Patchak notched three consecutive goals in less than three minutes to put the game out of reach.

Senior attackman T.J. Durnan (Chaminade/Rockville Centre, N.Y.) also turned in a fine afternoon for Duke, scoring three goals and assisting on another.

Senior James Murtha (Manhasset/Manhasset, N.Y.) made nine saves for Hobart.

The story of the afternoon was Breslin's stellar performance, which included four saves against his fraternal twin, Jamie, Hobart's leading scorer.

The Blue Devils advance to the quarterfinals, where they'll face the defending national champion, Virginia, at noon, on Sun., May 21, at Johns Hopkins University.
