GENEVA, N.Y. -- The William Smith College soccer team dropped a tough decision to Gettysburg, 2-1 in the second round of the Heron Cup this afternoon. The Herons drop to 2-2-0 while the Bullets improve to 2-2-0. In the other second round game, SUNY-Oneonta (3-1-0) blanked New York University (1-3-0) 1-0.
William Smith jumped to a 1-0 lead when sophomore forward Kristen Perrigo (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) buried a pass from junior midfielder Summer Greiner (East Syracuse-Minoa/Kirkville, N.Y.) in the eighth minute. Gettysburg evened the score in the 27th minute when Rachael Rzemieniewski drove the ball past junior goalie Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Caledonia, N.Y.). The score remained tied until the 74th minute when Rzemieniewski struck again, firing in a rebound to finish the scoring at 2-1.
Perrigo, Cornwell, and senior defender Kathleen Thelian (Phillips Exeter Academy/Garden City, N.Y.) were named to the All-Tournament team. The Herons are back in action Sept. 15, at St. Lawrence at 4 p.m.
In the early game, Oneonta's Amy DuCharme scored the game's lone goal in the 37th minute on a direct kick. NYU's Becca Giefer made 10 saves while Oneonta's Megan McCoy stopped four shots to preserve the shutout.
