GENEVA, N.Y.–- The William Smith College field hockey team came from behind to defeat Susquehanna, 5-2 in the first round of the William Smith Invitational. The Herons improve to 3-1, while the Crusaders drop to 2-2. In the other first round game St. Lawrence University dropped Wilkes University 6-2.
In William Smith's opener, senior forward Lauren von Bereghy (University Lake School/Hartland, Wis.) put the Herons on the board first, driving a ball past Susquehanna's Kylie Cook at 27:43 of the first half. The Crusaders evened the game just 21 seconds later when Kate McKeever knocked in a loose ball. Susquehanna went up 2-1 with 14:48 left in the half when Crusader Lindsay Barr's penalty stroke beat junior goalie Marjie MacVean (Johnstown/Johnstown, N.Y.) stickside.
William Smith wasted no time in the second half as junior midfielder Nicky Livingston (Whitney Point/Whitney Point, N.Y.) got the equalizer through a crowd at 33:37. Sophomore midfielder Erin Weir (Blair Academy/Califon, N.J.) put the Herons up 3-2 four minutes later, burying a pass from von Bereghy. Sophomore forward Shelia McKevitt (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) and Junior forward Jackie Hall tacked on two insurance goals making it 5-2.
MacVean made five saves. William Smith faces Wilkes Sept. 17, at 2 p.m., in the second round.
In the second game St. Lawrence's Lindsay Wormwood scored two goals, and Stacey Turner had a goal and two assists to knock off Wilkes 6-2. St. Lawrence improves to 3-0, while Wilkes drops to 2-4. The St. Lawrence faces Susquehanna Sept. 17, at 11 a.m.
