GENEVA, N.Y.–In the second round of the William Smith Invitational, William Smith College used a five-goal second half surge to secure a 6-1 win over visiting Wilkes University. The Herons were led by the two-goal performance of junior Jackie Hall (Berkshire School/Newport, R.I.).
Sophomore Shelia McKevitt (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) notched the lone goal of the first half to give William Smith (4-1) the early lead. After the break the Herons tripled their lead in the first five minutes with back-to-back goals by Hall and senior Amy Leckinger (Norwell/New Seabury, Mass.). Leckinger's tally was the first of her collegiate career.
Junior Nicky Livingston (Whitney Point/Whitney Point, N.Y.), Hall, and sophomore Amanda Arpé (Greely/Falmouth, Mass.) rounded out the William Smith scoring. Sophomore Kim Whipple (Mifflinburg, Pa.) recorded the lone goal for the Lady Colonels, who fall to 2-5 on the season.
Junior Marjie MacVean (Johnstown/Johnstown, N.Y.) and first-year Jess Kulesa (Garden City/Patchogue, N.Y.) combined to make 13 saves for the Herons, while first-year Desiree Podrasky (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) made 11 stops for Wilkes.
In earlier second round action, Susquehanna rebounded from a 5-2 loss to William Smith to top St. Lawrence 3-2.
William Smith returns to action on Sept. 20, when it hosts Brockport at 4 p.m.
