Box Score GENEVA, N.Y. – The Hobart College hockey team ended a five-game winless streak this afternoon, defeating SUNY Brockport 3-1. Two first period breakaway goals made the difference as the Statesmen (5-8-2, 0-2) avenged a season-opening loss to the Golden Eagles (2-11-2).
In the first period, Hobart took control early, but missed chances. At the 12:04 mark senior defenseman Eric Christianson (Wilbraham & and Monson/East Longmeadow, Mass.) sent a pass from the Statesmen's zone to senior forward Greg Reynholds (The Loomis Chaffee School/South Glastonbury, Conn.) behind the Brockport defense. Reynholds skated in all alone and ripped a shot over Eagle goalie Steve Tippett's left shoulder to give the Hobart a 1-0 lead. Six minutes later junior forward Dan Bush (The Loomis Chaffee School/Wallingford, Conn.) made the most of another breakaway for a 2-0 Statesmen lead.
Hobart held the advantage through most of the physical second period. At the 16:53 mark, a blast off a Brockport stick punched a hole in the glass behind the Hobart goal, causing a 15-minute delay. Just 37 seconds after play resumed, Eagle forward Drew Morley stuffed a pass by senior goalie Chris Connolly (Pingree School/Melrose, Mass.) to cut the lead to 2-1. In the third period senior forward Jerry Toomey (Pingree School/Woburn, Mass.) iced the game with just over 10 minutes remaining, poking the puck past Tippett for the 3-1 lead.
The Statesmen outshot the Eagles 37-14. Connolly finished with 13 saves for Hobart, while Tippett made 34 stops for Brockport. The Statesmen return to action Jan. 16, when they face Neumann College on the road at 7 p.m.
