Statesmen survive Yellowjacket sting

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.–The Hobart College basketball team posted a come-from-behind victory this evening in Bristol Gym to secure its third straight win, a 71-69 nail-biter over the University of Rochester. Sophomore center Joe Corbett (Haverford School/Philadelphia, Pa.) led the Statesmen with 22 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Hobart led by as many as six in the opening stanza, but the Yellowjackets (9-5) clawed their way to a 38-35 halftime lead. Rochester led by as many as eight after the break, and led 63-56 with 6:28 remaining in the contest. That's when the Statesmen (7-4) went to work.

Re-energized by a Tim Lomot 3-pointer, Hobart whittled the Rochester lead to one, 66-65, with 4:20 to go. Lomot, a sophomore from Amityville, N.Y., finished with 14 points, including a perfect 3-of-3 performance from beyond the 3-point arc.

A Corbett layup at the 4:05 mark gave the Statesmen a lead that they refused to relinquish. The Yellowjackets forged ties at 67 and 69 points, but couldn't solve the Hobart defense for the lead. Single free throws by Corbett and Lomot lifted Hobart to a 71-69 lead, while the Statesmen's smothering defense limited Rochester to just two shots in the final minute, both off the mark and both corralled by Statesmen.

Junior Michael Gambino (Our Lady of Lourdes/Hyde Park, N.Y.) chipped in 14 points for Hobart, while junior Brian Schiele (St. Anthony's/Seaford, N.Y.) added nine points and four assists. Sophomore forward Rocco Walsh (Lynbrook School/Lynbrook, N.Y.) turned in a seven-rebound performance off the bench.

Andy Larkin led Rochester with a game-high 25 points.

Hobart returns to action on Fri., Jan 19, when they host Skidmore in a UCAA battle. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
