Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.–Junior guard Brian Schiele (St. Anthony's/Seaford, N.Y.) scored a career-high 27 points to lead the Hobart College basketball team to an 86-78 win over visiting Union College this afternoon. The win is the fifth in a row for the Statesmen, just three shy of the school record.
Schiele led four Hobart players in double-digits, connecting on 7-of-11 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, and a perfect 10-of-10 from the charity stripe. He also had five assists and three rebounds.
Hobart (9-4, 4-0 in UCAA) never trailed the Dutchmen (8-5, 3-2) and used a 7-0 run to break the final tie of the game at 18-all midway through the opening half. The Statesmen led 40-34 at the break.
In the second half, Hobart led by as many as 17 and held a 70-55 advantage when sophomore center Joe Corbett (Haverford School/Philadelphia, Pa.) fouled out with 15 points and 15 rebounds. The Statesmen kept the lead in double digits as late as the 1:30 mark when Shiele beat the Union press with a pass to a wide-open Davidek Herron (Schenectady/Schenectady, N.Y.). Herron's dunk gave Hobart a 77-65 lead. The sophomore forward finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds, including 12 points and 10 rebounds in the second half.
The Dutchmen got as close as six with 10 seconds remaining on a 3-pointer by Dave Musella, but a pair of Schiele free throws with six seconds left sealed the eight-point win. Musella finished with 26 points for Union.
Junior Michael Gambino (Our Lady of Lourdes/Hyde Park, N.Y.) also reached double digits for Hobart with 11 points.
The Statesmen return to action on Tues., Jan 23, when they host UCAA-foe Hamilton at 8 p.m., in Bristol Gym.
