Statesmen tie Bengals, 5-5

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y. – The Hobart College hockey team rallied to tie Buffalo State after a wild third period. A 2-1 game after two periods, both teams exploded for a combined seven goals in a twelve minute span, fighting to a 5-5 draw.

The Statesmen came out agressive in the first period and senior forward Sean Elliot (St. Joe's Collegiate/Buffalo, N.Y.) got them on the board first, at the 6:38 mark. The play was even for the rest of the period, neither team able to capitalize on several scoring chances.

In the second period, Bengal Todd Nowicki evened the score just over six minutes in, beating senior goalie Sam Weiner (Philadelphia Jr. Flyers/Meadowbrook, Pa.) high. Two Bengals and one Statesmen hit goal posts before senior forward Greg Reynholds (The Loomis Chaffee School/South Glastonbury, Conn.) gave Hobart a 2-1 lead late in the second period.

Buffalo State wasted no time in the third period as Nowicki scored his second goal of the night at the 3:27 mark. Less than three minutes later Joe Urbanik buried a Nowicki pass to give the Bengals a 3-2 lead. Eight minutes into the period Reynholds struck again, ripping a pass from senior forward Zach Mundy (Berkshire School/Cranston, R.I.) over the shoulder of Buffalo State goalie Nick Berti to knot the score at three. At the 12:46 mark, senior forward Tim McCarthy (Northwood School/Cazenovia, N.Y.) put the Statesmen back on top 4-3. Two minutes later Nowicki notched a hat trick, beating a sliding Weiner stick side. With five minutes to go Stephen Troup poked home a loose puck to give the Bengals a 5-4 lead. Just 23 seconds later, McCarthy carried the puck all the way from his own end and fired a low shot between the pads of Berti to tie the game. Neither team could score in the final four minutes and defense dominated the play in overtime as the teams skated to a 5-5 tie.

Reynholds and McCarthy led Hobart with two goals each, Elliot had a goal and one assist, and Mundy assisted on three goals. Buffalo State's Nowicki led all scorers with three goals and two assists. Weiner and Berti each stopped 37-of-42 shots.

Hobart (6-9-3, 0-2) resumes league play when it travels to Manhattanville to take on the Valiants on Jan. 27, at 7 p.m.
