Statesmen edge Continentals in OT thriller

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.–Junior guard Brian Schiele (St. Anthony's/Seaford, N.Y.) buried a three-pointer with 22 seconds left in overtime to give the Hobart College basketball team the lead for good as they went on to a 67-62 victory over Hamilton College.

The defending UCAA champion Continentals came out shooting, scoring the first eight points of the game, but couldn't shake the Statesmen. Hobart regrouped to tie the game at 16, but a Hamilton 15-4 run left the Statesmen trailing 31-20 at the end of the half.

Hobart stayed close to the Continentals before taking their first lead of the game, 42-41, with 11:19 to go on a jumper by sophomore center Joe Corbett (Haverford School/Philadelphia, Pa.). The Statesmen never trailed again. A layup by sophomore forward Davidek Herron (Schenectady/Schenectady, N.Y.) at the 2:06 mark gave Hobart a 58-54 lead, their biggest of regulation. The Continentals battled back to tie the game at 58 and force overtime.

In overtime Hobart and Hamilton traded baskets until Schiele's three-pointer broke a 62-62 tie. Two free throws by Herron iced the game with eight seconds remaining and the Statesmen held on for the 67-62 victory.

The victory was Hobart's sixth in a row and first over Hamilton since 1988. Corbett led all scorers with 22 points, as well as 18 rebounds. Herron also finished with a double-double with 21 points and 13 boards. Schiele and senior guard Kevin Leonardo (Coxsackie-Athens/Coxsackie, N.Y.) added 10 and eight points, respectively.

Hobart (10-4, 5-0) is back in action this weekend when the Statesmen host Clarkson and St. Lawrence on Jan. 26-27.
