Statesmen win eighth straight, match school record

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.–The Hobart College basketball team held off St. Lawrence University, 81-76, for its eighth straight victory, tying the school mark. Four Statesmen reached double digits as the team improved to 12-4 overall and 7-0 in the UCAA.

Hobart trailed by as many as seven points in the first half, but stayed with the Saints. At the 5:59 mark, a three pointer by junior guard Brian Schiele (St. Anthony's/Seaford, N.Y.) gave the Statesmen a 22-21 lead and Hobart never trailed again. A layup by sophomore center Joe Corbett (Haverford School/Philadelphia, N.Y.) with 2:40 to go in the half gave the Statesmen a 33-23 lead, but St. Lawrence charged back with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 33-30 at the half.

Hobart couldn't shake the Saints in the second half. A Nick Burkhard jumper at the 17:48 mark tied the game at 36 apiece. The Statesmen opened up leads of six and eight, but St. Lawrence answered. Two Schiele free-throws gave Hobart a 69-61 advantage with just over five minutes to go. The Saints closed to 74-72 at the 1:30 mark, but clutch free throw shooting by senior guard Kevin Leonardo (Coxsackie-Athens/Coxsackie, N.Y.), 6-of-6 in the last 1:30, iced the game for the Statesmen as they came away with the 81-76 victory.

Sophomore forward Davidek Herron (Schenectady/Schenectady, N.Y.) led all scorers and rebounders with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Junior forward Michael Gambino (Our Lady of Lourdes/Hyde Park, N.Y.) finished with 15 points and Leonardo had 14 on the night. First-year Trever McAndrew (Northfield-Mt. Hermon/Westerly, R.I.) came off the bench scoring a career-high 11 points, including 3-for-3 from behind the arc. Corbett recorded his 10th straight double-double, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Statesmen are back in action Feb. 2-3, when they travel to Union and Skidmore to continue their league schedule.
