Saints knock off Herons, 56-41

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.–The William Smith College basketball team had its four-game winning streak snapped this afternoon by UCAA foe St. Lawrence University, 56-41. The Herons fall to 11-5 overall, 5-2 in the UCAA.

The Saints (16-1, 8-0) got off to a fast start, charging out to a 10-0 lead less than four minutes into the contest. William Smith used an 8-0 run to even the contest at 16-all, but St. Lawrence outscored their hosts 16-4 down the stretch for a 30-18 halftime lead. The Herons were held without a field goal in the final 7:54 of the opening half.

After the break, William Smith closed to within six, 35-29, on a free throw by sophomore forward Laura Hadwin (Vestal/Vestal, N.Y.), but a 10-2 St. Lawrence run pushed the lead back into double digits where it remained for the rest of the contest.

Junior forward Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Caledonia, N.Y.) led the Herons with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Hadwin finished with nine points on 9-of-10 shooting from the free throw line.

Meredith Eisenhut led St. Lawrence with 15 points and nine rebounds.

William Smith returns to action on Fri., Feb. 2, at 6 p.m., when its travels to Union.
