Herons knock off Brewers, 76-54

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.–The William Smith College basketball team rebounded from a tough loss for a convincing 76-54 victory over Vassar College on Senior Day. A fast start from the Herons' two seniors put their team on top for good as William Smith captured its 13th win of the season.

Senior forward Erin Case (Greene/Greene, N.Y.) knocked down a three pointer on a pass from fellow senior Brianna Tindall (Pultney/Castleton, Vt.) to open the scoring at the 19:09 mark. Case then returned the favor 19 seconds later as Tindall buried a three of her own for a 6-0 lead. The Herons then gave the ball to junior center Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Caledonia, N.Y.) who dominated the first half, scoring all of her 16 points in the opening 20 minutes and grabbing seven of her eight rebounds. The Brewers closed to within five points at the 9:31 mark, but another Case three-pointer ignited a 13-2 William Smith run for a 38-19 lead. The first half ended with the Herons up 44-25.

In the second half, a jumper by Vassar's Lisa Ercolano cut the lead to 48-40, but the Herons responded with a 10-0 run of their own as they pulled away for the 22-point win. Case finished with 11 points, four assists, and three rebounds, while Tindall scored 10 points, stole the ball four times, and recorded three assists for the Herons (13-7, 7-4). Ercolano led all scorers with 26 points for the Brewers (14-6, 5-6).

The Herons continue their league schedule Feb. 13, at 6 p.m., when they travel to Hamilton College. They wrap up the regular season on the road Feb. 16-17, when they face Clarkson University and St. Lawrence University at 6 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
