Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.–The Hobart College basketball team put five players in double digits and forced visiting Vassar College into 22 turnovers to improve to 10-0 in Bristol Gym this season with a 90-70 win over the Brewers. Senior guard Kevin Leonardo (Coxsackie-Athens/Coxsackie, N.Y.) and sophomore center Joe Corbett (Haverford School/Philadelphia, Pa.) led the Statesmen with a pair of double-double efforts.
Hobart (16-5, 10-1 in UCAA) shook off a sluggish start that saw the team trail by as many as eight and as late as the 6:18 mark, before a Tim Lomot (Amityville/Amityville, N.Y.) 3-pointer gave the Statesmen a 26-24 lead. Hobart pushed its lead to 10 by halftime and never led by less than eight after the break.
The Statesmen connected on 32-of-64 shots, marking the sixth time this season Hobart has shot 50 percent or better from the floor. Vassar (7-14, 2-9) also got off to a hot start, shooting 51.7 percent from the field in the first half, but the Statesmen defense intensified its efforts in the second stanza, limiting the Brewers to just 37.5 percent shooting, while forcing 14 Vassar turnovers.
Playing in his final regular season home game, Leonardo recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 11 assists, while Corbett added 20 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
Sophomore forward Davidek Herron (Schenectady/Schenectady, N.Y.) paced the Hobart scoring effort with 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting. Lomot added a career-high 16 points and junior swingman Michael Gambino (Our Lady of Lourdes/Hyde Park, N.Y.) contributed 15 points.
Tirek Gayle was the only Vassar play to reach double digits with a game-high 32 points to go with 12 rebounds.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Tues., Feb. 13, at 8 p.m., when they travel to Hamilton College.
