Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.–The second-seeded Hobart College basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament with a 78-55 win over No. 7 Vassar College. The Statesmen were tied with the Brewers at halftime, but used a 19-1 run midway through the second half to remain unbeaten at home this season (11-0).
The win matches the Hobart record for wins in a season (18) set by the 1978-79 squad. The Statesmen were led by sophomore center Joe Corbett (Haverford School/Philadelphia, Pa.), who finished with game-highs in points (23) and rebounds (18). His 18 boards, which included 10 off the offensive glass, helped him break the Hobart single season rebounding record. He raised his season total to 330 this evening, surpassing the old mark set by Hobart Hall of Famer Carmen Genovese '70 during the 1968-69 season (327).
The Statesmen jumped out to a 7-0 lead against Vassar (8-17), but the Brewers battled back to tie the contest at 11, and stayed within striking distance of Hobart throughout the first 20 minutes.
After the break, the game remained nip-and-tuck with Vassar taking its final lead of the evening at the 14:56 mark, 36-34, on a three-pointer by Brian Snodgrass. He led the Brewers with 12 points.
With Hobart leading 42-40 and 13:12 remaining in the contest, the Statesmen commenced their decisive run. Corbett had 11 of Hobart's 19 points during that seven-minute span, that saw a two-point advantage balloon into a 20-point blowout.
The most noticeable difference between the first and second halves for Hobart was the rebounding margin. The Statesmen held a slim 19-16 advantage on the glass at the break, but outrebounded the Brewers 20-14 in the second half. Hobart posted 23 second chance points to Vassar's three.
Sophomore forward Davidek Herron (Schenectady/Schenectady, N.Y.) also posted a double-double for the Statesmen with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Senior guard Kevin Leonardo (Coxsackie-Athens/Coxsackie, N.Y.) and sophomore guard Tim Lomot (Amityville/Amityville, N.Y.) also reached double digits in points with 15 and 10, respectively.
The Statesmen return to action on Fri., Feb. 23, when they take on the tournament's third seed, Hamilton College. The game will be played in Canton, N.Y., at top-seeded St. Lawrence.
