Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.–The Hobart College basketball team picked up its 11th victory in its past 12 games by sinking 35-of-52 free throw attempts to post a 68-59 win over visiting Rensselaer. The Statesmen were led by the double-double effort of sophomore forward Davidek Herron (Schenectady/Schenectady, N.Y.), who finished with game-highs in points (24, also a career-high) and rebounds (11).
The Statesmen (15-5, 9-1 in UCAA) led throughout the opening 20 minutes, taking a 33-23 advantage into the locker room at the break. Hobart connected on nearly 43 percent of its shots in the opening frame, while limiting the Redhawks (10-10, 4-6) to just 34.6 percent shooting.
After halftime, RPI used a 13-1 run to claim a 36-34 lead with 17:49 left to play. The game was nip-and-tuck over the next 14 minutes as the teams forged seven ties and saw the lead change hands five times. The Redhawks held their final lead at the 5:38 mark, 53-51, on Khalil Fitzgerald's jumper. He finished with nine points and eight rebounds.
The game saw its final tie at the 3:25 mark, 55-55, but a Herron jumper followed by four consecutive free throws by sophomore center Joe Corbett (Haverford School/Philadelphia, Pa.) and two more by senior guard Kevin Leonardo (Coxsackie-Athens/Coxsackie, N.Y.) saw the Hobart lead balloon to eight, 63-55, with 1:02 remaining. RPI never got closer than in the final minute.
Corbett finished with 20 points and eight rebounds. He alone made nearly as many free throws as the Redhawks attempted, finishing 14-of-25, while RPI was 10-of-15. As a team, the Statesmen were 35-of-52 (.673) from the line.
Junior swingman Michael Gambino (Our Lady of Lourdes/Hyde Park, N.Y.) also reached double digits for Hobart, contributing 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting, including 1-of-2 from behind the arc, and 2-of-2 from the line.
Tom Carrk led the Redhawks with 10 points.
Hobart returns to action on Sat., Feb. 10, when they host Vassar, an 87-61 loser to Hamilton this evening. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
