GENEVA, N.Y. --The William Smith College lacrosse team got points from 18 different Herons as they pounded Clarkson University 22-2, this afternoon. After two snow-outs this week, the Golden Knights faced a deluge of William Smith shots in their season opener.
William Smith was in control from the opening whistle as they scored the first six goals of the game. Sophomore attacker Megan Shea (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) scored all three of her goals in the first half. A trio of Heron midfielders, sophomore Jackie Toner (Geneva/Geneva, N.Y.), senior Maura Reilly (Miss Porter's School/Newington, Conn.), and junior Susanna Young (Cleveland/Cleveland Heights, Ohio), each scored two goals in the opening 30 minutes. Erin Crowe and Mary Rice got Clarkson's lone goals in the first half, as the Herons held a 13-2 advantage at halftime.
William Smith shutout the Golden Knights 9-0 in the second half as they went on to the 22-2 victory. Shea's three goals led all scorers. Senior attacker Meghan Genovese (Geneva/Genovese, N.Y.) also had three points with a goal and two assists. First-year goalie Rebecca Splain (Middlebury Union/Middlebury, Vt.) got the win, making three saves in 45 minutes before junior Amy Bowen (Concord Carlisle/Carlisle, Mass.) finished the game, making one stop. Clarkson's Allison Morlock made 24 saves for the Knights. William Smith outshot Clarkson 52-8.
The fourth-ranked Herons (5-0, 2-0 UCAA) are back in action April 4, when they host Hamilton College at 4 p.m.
