Box Score LEWISBURG, Pa.–The 13th-ranked Bucknell Bison lacrosse team rode a dominating first quarter to an impressive 12-4 Patriot League victory over 12th-ranked Hobart College this afternoon. The loss was the first for the Statesmen (3-1) and gives the Bison (7-2, 4-0) sole possession of first place in the conference.
Bucknell blanked the Statesmen in the first quarter for the first time since Harvard shutout Hobart in the first frame on March 22, 2000, while the Bison tallied four in their ledger. Senior Jamie Breslin (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) got the Statesmen on the board at the 13:13 mark of the second quarter.
The hosts, who topped Hobart for just the second time in 14 meetings, responded with back-to-back goals to build a 6-1 lead. Senior Jason Ouellet (Avon Old Farms/Cheshire, Conn.) trimmed Bucknell's lead to four, finishing a feed from sophomore John Bogosian (Kent School/Massena, N.Y.) on an extra-man opportunity. The Bison took a 6-2 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Senior Eric Burns (West Genesee/Syracuse, N.Y.), assisted by sophomore Brian Joy (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.), opened the second half scoring just 41 seconds into the third quarter to trim the Bucknell lead to three. The Statesmen would get no closer.
Over the next 17 minutes, the Bison rattled off six unanswered goals to build an insurmountable 12-3 lead with 10:28 remaining in the contest. Senior Trevor Morison (Fayetteville-Manlius/Manlius, N.Y.) scored the afternoon's final goal, assisted by sophomore Sean Kent (LaSalle/Oreland, Pa.), with 6:46 remaining.
Bucknell was outshot 44-30, but took advantage of exceptional passing to get quality shots in close. Bison goalie Justin Sussman finished with 19 stops, including 14 in the first half, while sophomore Mike Borsz (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.) finished with eight saves.
Hobart returns to action at 7 p.m., on Wed., April 4, when they travel to Patriot League foe Colgate.
