Big Red shut down Statesmen

Box Score ITHACA, N.Y.–The 14th-ranked Big Red of Cornell University (7-3) used a five-goal first quarter and strong defense to defeat the Hobart College lacrosse team for the first time in six meetings.

The Big Red opened the scoring at the 11:20 mark of the first quarter on a goal from Galen Beers. With a 3-0 lead and 15 seconds to play in the quarter, Cornell netted two more goals. The last coming on a shot from Michael Egan from the top of the box with a second remaining.

The play evened out in the second quarter as both defenses dug in and limited scoring opportunities. Hobart outshot the Big Red 8-4 in the second 15 minutes, but neither team was able to find the net and Cornell held a 5-0 lead at the half.

The Statesmen finally got on the board a minute into the third quarter as senior midfielder Jason Ouellet (Avon Old Farms/Cheshire, Conn.) fired the ball past Big Red goalie Justin Cynar and cut the deficit to four. Cornell answered with two goals in 14 seconds from Egan and David Key for a 7-1 advantage with 9:02 to go in the quarter. Sophomore attackman John Bogosian (Kent School/Massena, NY) got Hobart back within five at the 2:59 mark, burying a pass from senior attackman Jamie Breslin (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, NY) on the man advantage.

The Big Red put the game away in the final quarter, scoring the first four goals for an 11-2 lead. Bogosian closed the scoring with his second goal of the game with 2:29 remaining as Hobart dropped the 11-3 decision.

Bogosian led the Statesmen with two goals and an assist. Ouellet added a goal and an assist and Breslin finished with two assists. Sophomore goalie Mike Borsz (West Genesee/Camillus, NY) made a career-high 19 saves in goal for Hobart, while Cynar made nine stops for Cornell. Key led the Big Red with two goals and three assists and Egan scored three goals and recorded an assist.

The Statesmen (4-4) return to action April 21, when they host the Holy Cross Crusaders at 1 p.m.
