GENEVA, N.Y. --The William Smith College lacrosse team scored a season-high 24 goals to defeat Rensselaer for its 12th win of the season. Senior midfielder Meghan Genovese (Geneva/Geneva, N.Y.) scored a career-high five goals for the Herons, while sophomore attacker Megan Shea (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and junior midfielder Susanna Young (Cleveland/Cleveland Heights, Ohio) added four apiece.
William Smith opened the contest with four goals in the first six minutes before Redhawk Julia Geer (Shaker/Menands, N.Y.) cut the lead in half with back-toback goals. The Herons took an 8-2 advantage at the 15:14 mark on tallies from Young, Shea, and two goals from Genovese. Rensselaer's Geer netted her third 19 seconds later and Mary Roy (Columbia/Rensselaer, N.Y.)cut the lead to 8-4 with 11:25 to go in the half. The two teams traded goals for the remainder of the half and William Smith carried a 12-7 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Herons erased any doubt going on runs of 5-0 and 4-0 and outscoring the Redhawks 12-3 for the 24-10 final. Genovese finished with a five goals and an assist. Shea had four goals and two assists and Youngrecorded four goals and an assist. Senior midfielder Maura Reilly (Miss Porter's School/Newington,Conn.) added two goals and two assists and first-year Gretchen Lasda (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.) had a goal and two assists.
Geer and Roy led Rensselaer with four and two goals, respectively.
UCAA Goalie of the Week Rebecca Splain (Middlebury Union/Middlebury, Vt.) made four saves in 50 minutes and junior Amy Bowen (Concord-Carlisle/Carlisle, Mass.) made two saves in mop-up duty for William Smith (12-2, 6-1 UCAA). Ann Larson (Averill Park/Averill Park, N.Y.) made 12 stops in goal for the Redhawks (8-3, 5-2).
The Herons wrap up the regular season April 28, when they host Vassar at 2 p.m.
