Greyhounds outgun Statesmen, 19-11

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.–The seventh-ranked Loyola College Greyhounds rode the eight-goal performance of Gavin Prout (Whitby, Ontario) to a 19-11 victory over the Hobart College lacrosse team on Boswell Field. The loss drops the Statesmen to 5-6 on the season, while the Greyhounds improve to 9-2 with their fifth straight win.

Loyola appeared ready to run away with the game in the early going. Following Hobart senior Jamie Breslin's extra-man goal with 11 minutes remaining in the first quarter, the Greyhounds registered three consecutive goals by Stephen Brundage (Camillus, N.Y.), Bobby Horsey (West Chester, Pa.), and Prout to build a 4-1 advantage. Brundage finished with three goals and an assist.

Senior midfielder Jason Ouellet (Avon Old Farms/Cheshire, Conn.) interrupted the streak at the 5:18 mark, but Prout and Horsey responded with back-to-back goals to close the first quarter with a 6-2 lead. The Greyhounds scored on all six of their first quarter shots on goal. Horsey finished with four goals.

In the second quarter, Loyola outscored the Statesmen 4-3, including three extra-man goals, to take a 10-5 advantage into the locker room.

After the break, Hobart scored four of the first five goals to climb back into the contest. Breslin (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) started the run, finishing a feed from Tim Booth (Waterloo/Waterloo, N.Y.) just 24 seconds into the second half. Breslin finished with three goals and an assist to move into a tie for 19th on Hobart's career scoring list with John Bishop '76 (137 points).

Booth, meanwhile, turned in a career performance at the faceoff X. In addition to a goal and an assist, the sophomore won 27 of the 32 restarts he took to help the Statesmen to an impressive 29-5 faceoff advantage. Booth's previous high for faceoffs won was 15 of 25 at Loyola last season.

Sophomore attackman John Bogosian (Kent School/Massena, N.Y.) continued Hobart's third quarter surge, scoring off a Kris Shore (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) pass to pull the Statesmen to within three, 10-7.

Following a Greyhound goal at the 6:53 mark, Ouellet, who led Hobart with four tallies, netted back-to-back goals, set up by senior Joe Leska (Vestal/Vestal, N.Y.) and Bogosian, respectively, to trim the deficit to two, 11-9.

Hobart would get no closer. Loyola scored the last two goals of the third quarter and scored six of the first seven of the fourth to break the contest open.

Bogosian finished with two goals and two assists, while sophomore Mike Borsz (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.) and first-year Avram Feld (Middlebury/Middlebury, Vt.) combined to make six saves.

For Loyola, Chris Summers (Annapolis, Md.) added a goal and four assists, while Gunnar Goettelmann (Manhasset, N.Y.) chipped in four assists. Jason Born made a season-high 14 stops for the Greyhounds.

Hobart will close out the regular season at top-ranked Princeton at 1 p.m. on May 5.
