William Smith soccer dominates Vassar

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College soccer team received goals from six different players on its way to a 6-0 rout over visiting Vassar College. With this victory the Herons (11-2-3, 4-1-1 UCAA) clinched a spot in the UCAA post-season tournament to be held on Nov. 9-10.

William Smith struck early in the first half, scoring two goals in the opening 15 minutes. Senior midfielder Stephanie Leveille (Ossining/Ossining, N.Y.) put the Herons up 1-0 when she headed a Pria Young (Council Rock/Richboro, Pa.) corner kick past the Vassar goalie. Senior Kristin Falzarano (Morristown/Morris Plains, N.J.) made the game 2-0 when she put in a rebound from Brewers’ keeper Heather Jaffe (The Hun School/Belle Mead, N.J.) for her eighth goal of the season.

Sporting a 2-0 lead at halftime, the Herons continued to push the ball forward in the second half, resulting in four more goals from William Smith. Junior Arin Belden (Warsaw/Warsaw, N.Y.), senior Alyson Stachura (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.), first-year Jamie Janowich (South Carroll/Sykesville, Md.), and first-year Danya Michaels (Cape Elizabeth/Cape Elizabeth, Maine) all netted scores for the Herons in the second half.

William Smith senior Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Scottsville, N.Y.) was unchallenged during her 58 minutes in goal, while senior Melissa Buonvecchio (East-Syracuse-Minoa/East Syracuse, N.Y.) made two saves in 32 minutes. Jaffe, Alice England (West/Salt Lake City, Utah), and Heather Anderson (Central/Worcester, N.Y.) combined for eight saves on the evening.

The Herons return to action tomorrow, Oct. 26, when they host UCAA rival Rensselaer at 2 p.m.
