GENEVA, N.Y.—The 13th-ranked William Smith College field hockey team defeated visiting St. Lawrence University this afternoon, 3-1. Three different Herons scored in the teams’ final Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association game of the regular season.
Sophomore forward Lily Gillett (Wheeler School/Seekonk, Mass.) opened the scoring early in the first half to give William Smith (12-5, 5-2 UCAA) a 1-0 lead.
The Saints (10-4, 5-2 UCAA) answered at the 19:15 mark when first-year forward Carrie Eggleston (Corinth/Corinth, N.Y.) finished a feed from classmate Kate Yarmowich (Warrensburg/Warrensburg, N.Y.).
Sophomore forward Sarah Silverio (Radnor/Villanova, Pa.) drove home the game winner eight minutes before halftime, and senior defender Brigid Lynch (Manhasset/Manhasset, N.Y.) added an insurance goal with 4:24 remaining in the contest.
In goal, junior Jessica Kulesa (Garden City/Garden City, N.Y.) made four saves for the Herons, while junior Amelia Gomez (Millbrook/Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) made six stops for the Saints.
William Smith is assured a spot in the inaugural UCAA Championship Tournament. The four-team playoff will be played at the top seed and begin on Nov. 9. The Herons will be the second or third seed depending on the results of the Skidmore at Rensselaer (in progress) and Rensselaer at Vassar (Nov. 2) games
William Smith will close out the regular season on Nov. 2, when they travel to Nazareth for a 1 p.m., start.
