Box Score April 27, 2002

BALTIMORE—Facing a potential three-way tie in the Patriot League that will be decided by the NCAA RPI rating index, the Hobart lacrosse team had a golden opportunity to solidfy their place as the favorite to earn the AQ with a win at 11th-ranked Loyola. The Greyhounds had other ideas.

The teams played the first 11 minutes without a tally, but a pair of Loyola goals in the wanning minutes of the opening frame kicked off a 10-0 run. The Statesmen faced a 6-0 deficit at halftime following a four-goal outburst that included three extra-man tallies in the second quarter.

The game featured more flags than a Fourth of July celebration, with Hobart drawing a season-high 12 penalties for 10 minutes, and Loyola earning 10 flags for 8 minutes, 30 seconds. The Statesmen finished 2-of-8 in extra-man situations, while the Greyhounds were 6-of-10.
Following the break, Loyola pushed its lead to 10 before senior midfielder David Spratlen broke Hobart’s scoring drought with 3:49 remaining in the third quarter.

Senior attackman Scott Harvey and sophomore attackman Geoff Zbikowski added fourth quarter goals following a 4-0 Greyhound spurt for the final 14-3. Zbikoswki was the only Statesmen with a multiple point afternoon, registering a goal and an assist.

Junior Mike Borsz made nine saves in 52 minutes, while first-year Dan Valente turned away the lone shot he faced in relief.

Hobart will close out its 100th season at home on May 4. The Statesmen will host Cornell, the same teams that squared off to begin Hobart’s lacrosse history in 1898. Faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
