Herons, Dutchwomen go undefeated in Heron Cup

Box Score September 15, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y. – The William Smith College Herons (3-1-2) and the Union College Dutchwomen (2-1-0) completed a perfect weekend, winning their respective matches in the final day of the Heron Cup. Union dropped NYU 1-0 in the morning game, while William Smith handed Montclair State its second loss of the weekend with a 2-0 victory.

In the first game of the day, Union and NYU played to a scoreless tie until Alaina LaRocca (Holy Trinity/Massapequa, N.Y.) put the Dutchwomen on top as she slipped a slotted pass from Katelyn Kovacs (Wahconah/Dalton, Mass.) past the NYU goalie. Despite having good scoring chances the Violets were unable to put the ball in the back of the net to tie the score. Dutchwomen keeper Julie Gawronski (Dunkirk/Dunkirk, N.Y.) grabbed six saves while NYU goalies Becca Giefer (Mahtomedi/Mahtomedi, Minn.) and Alison Myers (Lakeside Upper School/Bellevue, Wash.) combined for six saves on the day.

In the afternoon matchup, the Herons dominated play, as Montclair was only able to get four shots off. William Smith was composed as they played the ball on the ground, controlling the possession and tempo of the game. Building the attack from the back, the Herons finally got on the board in the 30th minute when a Montclair defender deflected a shot by Kristin Falzarano (Morristown/Morris Plains, N.J.) past the Red Hawk goalie. William Smith struck again eight minutes later when Jenn Tibbens (Sherburne-Earlville/Sherburne, N.Y.) found a sprinting Shelly Smith (G. Ray Bodley/Fulton, N.Y.) in the box. Smith flicked the pass from Tibbens with the outside of her foot into the opposite corner of the goal to put the Herons up 2-0.

William Smith goalie Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Scottsville, N.Y.) did not see much action, making three saves during the 90 minutes to earn her second shutout of the season. Montclair keeper Stephanie Romanko (North Brunswick/North Brunswick, N.J.) stayed busy, notching six saves on the afternoon.

The Herons are back in action on Sept. 21, when they travel to Ithaca for a noon game. William Smith will not play another home match until Oct. 15, when they face off against rival Nazareth at 4 p.m.
