Box Score September 21, 2002GENEVA, N.Y.—The 16th-ranked William Smith College field hockey team opened the 2002 William Smith Invitational with an impressive 3-0 victory over Manhattanville College. The Herons got goals from three different players to post their third victory of the season.
William Smith (3-2) opened the scoring less than 10 minutes into the contest when senior midfielder Amanda Arpé (Greely/East Falmouth, Mass.) won a scramble in front of the Valiant’s cage, burying a shot from 1-yard out.
Six and a half minutes later, first-year forward Tara Baker (Rome Free Academy/Lee Center, N.Y.) gave the Herons a two-goal lead, redirecting a shot by senior midfielder Erin Weir (Blair Academy/Califon, N.J.) past the Manhattanville goalie.
The Herons tacked on another insurance goal on a penalty corner in the second half. Senior forward Sheila McKevitt (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) buried a shot from the top of the circle, set up by Weir and senior defender Neely Wakeman (Holderness School/Cohasset, Mass.).
The Valiants, who were outshot 20-3, had their best scoring opportunity thwarted by William Smith goalie Jessica Kulesa (Garden City/Garden City, N.Y.). With less than a minute remaining in the first half, Manhattanville took two shots at the left side of the cage with Kulesa on the ground on the right side, but the junior made a pair of sprawled out stick saves to preserve the shutout.
For Manhattanville (6-3), sophomore April Yoemans (Lindenhurst/Lindenhurst, N.Y.) made six saves, while Kulesa finished with two saves in 67:54. First-year Susan Jordan (Boothbay/Boothbay, Maine) played the final 2:06 without facing a shot.
William Smith returns to action in the second round of its invitational on Sept. 22, when it hosts Susquehanna University at 2 p.m.
