Box Score September 25, 2002GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College’s Sheila McKevitt (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) led the Heron field hockey team in a rout of visiting Brockport State University, 5-1. The senior forward netted three goals in the contest, one more than she registered in William Smith’s previous six games combined.
McKevitt opened the afternoon’s scoring 7:44 into the contest, rocketing a blast past the Eagles’ keeper. The score off of a penalty corner was set up by senior defender Neely Wakeman (Holderness School/Cohasset, Mass.) and senior midfielder Erin Weir (Blair Academy/Califon, N.J.). Eight minutes later, the trio teamed up for a nearly identical goal to give William Smith a 2-0 lead.
Wakeman and Weir both finished with three assists.
Brockport (0-4) broke through for its only score of the afternoon on its very first shot 20:19 into the game. Sophomore midfielder Na’Lisa Rowe (Marathon/Marathon, N.Y.) fired a shot from 15 yards out to cut the Herons’ advantage in half.
McKevitt, who moved from 11th to ninth on the William Smith career goals list, scored again with less than nine minutes remaining in the opening frame. She now boasts 34 career goals and 12 assists for 80 points.
After the break, senior midfielder Amanda Arpé (Greely/East Falmouth, Mass.) and senior defender Brigid Lynch (Manhasset/Manhasset, N.Y.) added goals for the Herons (4-3).
Junior Jessica Kulesa (Garden City/Garden City, N.Y.) and first-year Susan Jordan (Boothbay/Boothbay, Maine) combined for three saves for William Smith, while sophomore Sarah Sutherland (Fort Ann/Fort Ann, N.Y.) made 12 stops for Brockport.
William Smith returns to action on Sept. 27, when the Herons travel to Rensselaer to face the Red Hawks in the UCAA opener for both teams. The contest is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
