Box Score September 7, 2002GENEVA, N.Y. – The William Smith College soccer team opened up its home schedule in style, beating the Oswego Lakers 6-2. The Herons improved to 1-1-2 on the season.
Oswego struck first with an unassisted goal in the fifth minute by Maureen Kaspereck (G. Ray Bodley/Fulton, N.Y.). William Smith bounced back 16 minutes later when first-year Steph Gridley (Auburn/Auburn, N.Y.) took a pass from Maria Paoff (East Syracuse-Minoa/East Syracuse, N.Y.) and slotted it past the Oswego keeper. Gridley scored again one minute later off an Erin Belden (Warsaw/Warsaw, N.Y.) assist. The Herons never looked back as Paoff and Belden racked up three goals and three assists, respectively.
Senior goalkeepers Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Scottsville, N.Y.) and Melissa Buonvecchio (East Syracuse-Minoa/East Syracuse, N.Y.) combined for three saves for the Herons, while Lakers’ goalie Alecia Scorsone (Geneseo/Geneseo, N.Y.) had six on the afternoon.
The Herons will be back in action on Sept. 14-15 when they host the Heron Cup. William Smith opens the tournament on Sept. 14, against NYU at 11 a.m., with Union and Montclair facing off at 2 p.m. On Sept. 15, Union and NYU begin the affair at 11 a.m. as the Herons kick off at 2 p.m. against Montclair.
