Saints sneak past Herons, 5-4

GENEVA, N.Y.--The William Smith tennis team lost a heart breaking 5-4 decision to conference rival St. Lawrence University this afternoon in the Bristol Field House. The Herons (3-2) had won three in a row entering the match.

William Smith held a 2-1 lead after doubles play was completed. Junior Molly Patterson (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and sophomore Karen Newbury (Maine-Endwell/Johnson City, N.Y.) secured the top doubles spot, 8-6, while junior Laura Maier (Lancaster Country Day/Reading, Pa.) and first-year Meghan Kelley (Norwell/Norwell, Mass.) took No. 2, 8-4.

However, the Saints (5-2) rebounded to win four of the six singles matches. The Heron victories came at No. 1 by Patterson, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 and at No. 3 by Maier 6-2, 6-2. Maier has not lost a singles match this season during a dual match, boasting a 5-0 mark.

The Heron tennis team is back in action at 4 p.m., on Oct. 7, when the Hamilton Continentals visit Geneva.
