Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College field hockey team dropped its first decision of the 2003 season, a 3-0 setback to Messiah College, this afternoon on McCooey Field. Junior forward Danae Chambers (Wilmington Christian/Elkton, Md.) scored twice to lead the visitors.
Last season’s NCAA runner up, Messiah held a decisive advantage in every aspect of the game, outshooting the Herons 20-4 and sporting a 9-3 advantage on penalty corners.
The Falcons (2-0) took a 1-0 lead on Chambers’ first goal at the 8:35 mark, and doubled their advantage at the 15:15 mark when senior forward Kelly Stanwell (Wilmington Christian/Newark, Del.) finished a feed from sophomore forward Aftan Fisher (Pequea Valley/Gap, Pa.).
After the intermission, Chambers added the final tally in the 38th minute.
Junior Erica Nelson (Washington/Princess Anne, Md.) earned the win in goal with one save, while senior Jessica Kulesa (Garden City/Garden City, N.Y.) made 10 stops for the Herons (1-1).
William Smith returns to action at 1 p.m., on Sat., Sept. 13, at Houghton.
