Late comeback lifts Union over William Smith, 67-62

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith basketball team led by as many as 11 points, but a late comeback by Union gave the Dutchwomen a 67-62 Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association victory in Bristol Gym this afternoon.

The Herons (7-7, 2-2 UCAA) got off to a great start, using a 12-0 run to erase a 6-3 deficit. Sophomore guard Pria Young (Council Rock/Richboro, Pa.) and first-year forward Ashley Rodger (Waterloo/Waterloo, N.Y.) keyed the run with five points apiece. William Smith led by as many as 11 in the first half, and took a 32-26 advantage into the break.

The second half proved to be a back and forth affair, as the lead changed hands five times. The Herons and Dutchwomen (12-2, 5-0 UCAA) also forged four ties in the second stanza. The turning point, proved to be an 11-0 run by Union in the waning minutes.

Junior guard Tara Brisson (Bishop Grimes/Liverpool, N.Y.) gave William Smith a 56-50 lead at the 6:54 mark. Union scored the next 11 points, including six off the hand of sophomore guard Erika Eisenhut (Mohawk/Mohawk, N.Y.). She finished with a game-high 16 points and six assists.

The Herons twice crept to within a point in the final three minutes, but could not reclaim the lead.

Brisson led William Smith with 15 points, while Rodger produced a double double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Young finished with 12 points, five steals, and four assists.

Junior guard Melissa Marra (Mechanicville/Mechanicville, N.Y.) and junior forward Katlyn Cunningham (Drury/Clarksburg, Mass.) both scored double digits for Union with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

William Smith is back in action at 6 p.m., on Jan. 27, at Hamilton.
