GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith swimming and diving team dropped a 138-104 dual meet decision to visiting Ithaca, but sophomore
Sarah Costanza (Gwynedd Mercy/Ambler, Pa.) turned in a record-setting performance on the 1-meter board.
In the 1-meter competition, Costanza easily surpassed the previous benchmark for six dives with a score of 272.35.
Elizabeth Breer ’90 held the old record, 266.10, set in 1987. Costanza’s score is her second this season that exceeds the NCAA Championship qualifying standard. William Smith will now submit video tape of both performances to be reviewed by the NCAA selection committee.
The flow of the meet favored the Herons in the early going, as they captured victories in five of the first seven events, but the veteran-laden Bombers were simply too deep, capturing the final six events of the meet. No swimmer for either team produced more than one individual victory.
