Keuka beats Hobart 73-58

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart senior guard Joe Virgilio (Wheatley/East Williston, N.Y.) scored a game-high 21 points, but it wasn’t enough to lift the Statesmen over visiting Keuka College in Bristol Gym this afternoon. The Storm used a big second half run to open the season with a 73-58 win.

Keuka scored the first five points of the contest and led for most of the first half, until junior guard Mike Manning (Center Moriches/Mastic, N.Y.) drained a three-pointer with 1:10 remaining. The triple gave the Statesmen a 26-24 lead that they carried over into the intermission.

Manning led all scorers at halftime with 11 of his 13 points on the day.

Virgilio opened the second half with a three-pointer and a layup to extend Hobart’s lead to 31-24. The surge seemed to rile up the Storm.

Keuka used a 22-4 run that spanned six minutes to seize a 46-35 lead. Junior forward Steve Willson (Penn Yan Academy/Bellona, N.Y.) keyed the run with eight of his 12 points.

Hobart made a run of its own late in the half, outscoring the Storm 10-2 to get within five, 58-53, with 2:20 remaining. Virgilio was the catalyst of that effort, scoring six points, including three free throws. He finished the day 10-of-10 from the line.

Unfortunately for the home team, Keuka answered with another run, ignited by a three-pointer by junior guard Corey Edwards (Elba/Elba, N.Y.). Edwards led all five Storm starters in double digits with 19 points. Keuka’s 8-2 run, ended Hobart’s hopes of a comeback.

For the Statesmen, senior guard Adam Frederic (Holy Cross/Flushing, N.Y.) chipped in 10 points, while senior forward Tim Apuzzo (Greely/Cumberland, Maine) was Hobart’s top rebounder (10).

For the Storm, senior forward Hanif Davis (Cranford/Cranford, N.J.) posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards.

Hobart returns to action on Nov. 22, when the Statesmen travel to Nazareth. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
