Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith senior
Maggie Dolan (Towson/Towson, Md.) scored three goals to reach the 100-point plateau and led the 11th-ranked Herons to a 6-1 win over Union College in the first semifinal of the Liberty League Field Hockey Tournament. The hat trick was Dolan’s second of the season and raised her career point total to 100, just the 11th Heron to reach that milestone.
William Smith, the tournament’s top seed, needed just 2:18 to take a 1-0 lead. Dolan buried a feed from junior
Ashley Barker (Cape Elizabeth/Cape Elizabeth, Maine) to open the scoring. Less than 10 minutes later, Dolan made it a 2-0 game, scoring on a penalty corner set up by juniors
Brooke Atwood (Marathon/Marathon, N.Y.) and
Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.).
Senior
Tara Baker (Rome Free Academy/Lee Center, N.Y.) made it a three-goal game in the 29th minute, poking home a point-blank shot assisted by junior
Liz Saucier (Old Town/Old Town, Maine). Dolan finished off her hat trick and closed out the first half scoring in the 31st minute, tipping in a shot by Saucier.
Union (10-9) finally broke through the Heron defense in the 45th minute when sophomore Chelsea Harris (Hartford/White River Junction, Vt.) knocked in a rebound. From that point on, William Smith senior goalie
Sue Jordan (Boothbay/Boothbay, Maine) was unbeatable, registering seven of her nine saves over the next 20 minutes before yielding to first-year
Katie DeKraker (Staples/Wesport, Conn.) with just under five minutes to play.
Dennis logged the last two Heron goals, 38 seconds apart, to inch closer to a pair of William Smith career records. The Liberty League Player of the Year now boasts 58 career goals and 141 career points one shy of the Heron gold standards set by
Jennifer Joinnides ’97 (59-24-142).
Union first-year goalie Elise Wakeland (Kennebunk/Arundel, Maine) made 14 saves.
William Smith (15-3) will face off with 13th-ranked Skidmore for the Liberty League Championship at 2 p.m. on Nov. 5. The Thoroughbreds advanced to the title tilt thanks to a 3-2 win over Rochester.
