Herons pilfer win from Bombers, 69-61

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith basketball team remained unbeaten with a 69-61 win over visiting Ithaca College this afternoon in Bristol Gym. The Herons recorded a season-high 17 steals, led by chief thief, senior guard Pria Young's (Council Rock/Richboro, Pa.) season-high nine steals.

William Smith (3-0) led from start to finish in this contest, scoring the first seven points and building a 10-point lead by the 7:47 mark of the first half. Young scored all 11 of her points before the intermission, helping the Herons take a 38-24 lead into the break.

In the second half, William Smith used a 10-1 run midway through the session to balloon its lead to 25 with 8:56 remaining. From there, the Bombers (0-3) whittled away at their deficit, mostly against Heron reserves, but Ithaca never came close to challenging for the lead.

William Smith dominated the boards, outrebounding Ithaca 47-31.

Young finished the night with 11 points, nine steals, six rebounds, and five assists. Junior guard Paula Foote (Sidney/Sidney, N.Y.) also chipped in 11 points, while sophomore guard Marisa Vespa (Immaculate Heart/Watertown, N.Y.) added 10 points to the Heron cause. Like Young, senior forward Seraphine Hamilton (The Peddie School/Trenton, N.J.) narrowly missed a double-double, ending the day with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Senior forward Jill Post (Oxford/Oxford, N.Y.) paced the Bombers with a game-high 13 points; she was the only Ithaca player in double digits.

William Smith is back in action at 8 p.m. on Dec. 6, when the Herons host Rochester in Bristol Gym.
