Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—Behind the 24-point effort of junior guard
Colby Feane (Weedsport/Weedsport, N.Y.), the Hobart College basketball team knocked off visiting Vassar College 86-72 in Bristol Gym this afternoon. The win, coupled with St. Lawrence’s 87-75 upset of Skidmore, gives the Statesmen the number one seed and the right to host the conference tournament Feb. 25-26.
Feane turned in a spectacular all-around effort, connecting on 10-of-16 from the floor, grabbing a team-high nine rebounds, handing out a game-high seven assists, and six steals. He also broke the Hobart record for consecutive games with a three-pointer made, raising the mark to 22.
Michael Gambino ’02 held the old benchmark (21).
Still a bit sluggish after Friday’s loss to visiting RPI, Hobart (15-9, 10-4 Liberty) struggled in the early minutes of this contest. The Statesmen trailed by as many as eight in the opening frame, 25-17, with 8:25 remaining. However, Feane helped his teammates shake off the early jitters, scoring eight straight points and sparking a 25-6 Hobart run to head into the half with a 42-31 lead.
After the break, the Statesmen put their efforts into overdrive, shooting 50 percent (16-32) from the floor. Hobart’s guard play in the first half—junior
Joe Virgilio (Wheatley/East Williston, N.Y.) scored 10 of his 16 points before the intermission—opened up the low post for the Statesmen big men.
Senior forward
Joe Flacke (Schenectady/Schenectady, N.Y.) scored all 12 of his points in the second half, draining 5-of-7 in the session. Junior forward
Tim Apuzzo (Greeley/Cumberland, Maine) chipped in nine points, eight rebounds, and two blocked shots.
The Brewers (12-12, 5-9) put four players in double digits, led by senior guard Jud Winton (University/San Francisco, Calif.), who finished with 17 points. Vassar cut its deficit to eight three times in the waning minutes of the second half, but never seriously threatened Hobart’s lead.
The Statesmen dominated nearly every aspect of the game, scoring more points off turnovers (19-11), scoring more points in the paint (42-28), getting more support from bench players (42-17), and scoring more points on fast break opportunities (22-4).
In next weekend’s Liberty League Tournament, Hobart will host Union with Hamilton and Skidmore tangling in the other semifinal on Feb. 25. Game times will be announced on Feb. 21.
