Box Score GENEVA, N.Y—Sophomore forward Laura Burnett-Kurie (Oyster River/Durham, N.H.) led the William Smith College soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Gettysburg College this morning in the opening game of the annual Heron Cup at Cozzens Field. The Herons dominated the offensive play, out shooting the Bullets 9-3.

The 23rd-ranked Herons (3-0) opened the scoring in the 15th minute as Burnett-Kurie squeaked a goal pass Gettysburg goaltender Kristin Short (St. Anthony’s/Massapequa, N.Y.) from deep inside the 18-yard box. All eight of Burnett-Kurie’s career goals have been game-winners.

That would be all the offense William Smith would need as the Herons’ defense stifled the Bullets’ offensive attack. William Smith limited Gettysburg to a meager three shots, all in the second half.

Junior goalkeeper Nikki Dudley (Chittenango/Chittenango, N.Y.) turned away a pair of Gettysburg shots to record her third shutout victory of the season. Short finished the match with six saves.

William Smith will return to action on Sept. 11 at 2 p.m., hosting Elmira in the finale of the Heron Cup.
