Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College soccer team scored a pair of second half goals to glide past the Soaring Eagles of Elmira 2-0 in the finale of the Heron Cup this afternoon at Cozzens Field. Sophomores
Johanna Murphy (Woodbridge, Conn.) and
Laura Burnett-Kurie (Oyster River/Durham, N.H.) led the dominating Herons’ offensive attack, who bombarded Elmira with 18 shots.
Although William Smith (4-0) controlled the play in the Elmira (0-4) defensive zone, the teams closed out the first half knotted at zero. Burnett-Kurie could not capitalize on a golden scoring opportunity as she broke in behind the Eagles defense and ripped a shot, but diving Elmira first-year goalkeeper Molly Hamel (Greeley/North Yarmouth, Mass.) deflected the offering. Hamel stood strong in net as she posted six saves.
The Herons finally broke through in the 54th minute as senior
Pria Young (Council Rock/Richboro, Pa.) served a corner kick into the box and Murphy headed the decisive goal into the middle of the net.
William Smith netted an insurance goal at the 85:31 mark as Burnett-Kurie received a through ball from first-year
Rayza Santiago (Webster Schroder/Webster, N.Y.) deep behind the Eagles’ defense. The offensive catalyst ripped her third goal of the season into the lower left corner of the cage.
The Herons’ veteran defense consistently disrupted the Elmira offensive attack. The Soaring Eagles registered their only shot at William Smith goaltender
Nikki Dudley (Chittenango/Chittenango, N.Y.) in the 69th minute. Dudley registered her fourth victory of the season, all shutouts, to improve William Smith’s perfect record to 4-0.
William Smith and Elmira both placed three players on the All-Tournament team. Senior
Kate Warner (Gould Academy/Glouster, Mass.), junior
Alex Rieben (Guilford/Guilford, Conn.), and Burnett-Kurie were recognized for the Herons, while senior Katie Allardice (Aquinas Institute/Hilton, N.Y.), junior Rachael Sparks (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa, N.Y.), and Hamel also garnered praise.
The Herons return to action on Sept. 14 at 4:30 p.m. as they welcome the University of Rochester to Geneva.
