CORTLAND, N.Y.--William Smith dropped its first match of the season to host Cortland State 6-3 this afternoon. The Herons slip to 1-1 overall.
William Smith was led by first-year Chelsea Rauck (Columbus School for Girls/Bexley, Ohio), who swept Laurie Dorscheid in a hard-fought first singles match, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5). Dorscheid rallied from 5-4 down in the second set and took a 6-5 lead, but Rauck won the next game and jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the tiebreaker. Dorscheid came back to knot the tiebreaker at 5-5, but Rauck won the next two points to claim the match.
Sophomore Cory Turner (Canterbury/Ridgefield, Conn.) won 6-1, 6-3 at fourth singles for the Herons, while sophomore Tara Ware (Avon/Avon, Conn.) concluded the match with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) win over Meredith McCaslin at fifth singles.
William Smith returns to action at 1 p.m., on Sept. 17, when the Herons travel to Brockport State.
