Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—Senior midfielder
Steph Gridley (Auburn/Auburn, N.Y.) recorded three points to lead the sixth-ranked William Smith College soccer team to a 2-0 victory in the Liberty League opener this afternoon on Cozzens Field. The Herons dominated the offensive play, outshooting the Saints 20-1.
Junior
Alex Reiben (Guilford/Guilford, Conn.) ripped the game-winner off of St. Lawrence goalkeeper Carly Draper (Colonel By Sectional School/Ottawa, Ontario) at the 10:21 mark. Senior
Pria Young (Council Rock/Richboro, Pa.) generated the scoring opportunity when she chipped in a corner kick to Gridley. Gridley gathered the ball and flicked a pass to Reiben.
William Smith (6-0-0, 1-0) extended its lead in the 19th minute as Gridley netted her first goal of the season. Gridley received a perfectly placed crossing pass from sophomore
Johanna Murphy (Amity/Woodbridge, Conn.).
That would be all the offense the Herons would need as William Smith’s vaunted defense stifled the Saints’ (4-1-0, 0-1) offensive attack.
Junior goalkeeper
Nikki Dudley (Chittenango/Chittenango, N.Y.) registered her only save of the game at the 65:55 mark to record her sixth consecutive shutout victory of the season, while Draper turned away nine offerings in the loss.
Since conference play started in 1995, William Smith is 10-1 in conference openers.
The Herons will host conference foe Clarkson University at 2 p.m. on Sept. 24.
